Introduction

Soichiro Honda was born in 1906 in Japan. In 1922 he dropped out of high school and moved to Hamamatsu, Japan, where he worked as an apprentice auto mechanic and studied at a technical school in the evenings. Inspired by the factory that produced piston rings near his home, Honda opened his own company building piston rings for Toyota in 1937. During World War II, Honda was designing airplanes but was unsuccessful. Toyota didn't buy his product, so he went out of business.

As a child, Honda was fascinated by the idea of motorcycles. In 1931, he built his own bike using parts from an old bicycle and began selling the vehicle at various fairs throughout Japan. It wasn't long before he began making motorcycle kits for consumers. In 1930, Honda started manufacturing engines under license from Nishimoto Engineering Co., Ltd., which was later renamed as "Nishimoto Engineering Co., Ltd." 

In 1942, Honda established his own factory in Hamamatsu City (now Kawasaki City). The first products produced were automobiles and commercial vehicles such as trucks and buses; these were marketed under the brand name “Honda Mobilio” until 1949 when it became simply known as “Honda” after merging with Takanezawa Manufacturing Co., Ltd.. 

The following year (1946), Soichiro returned to Hamamatsu with his wife and son after leaving their jobs with Suzuki & Co., Ltd., a motorcycle manufacturer based in nearby Nagoya City - an area known today as Aichi Prefecture’s historic industrial center.*

Post WWII, Honda started selling motorbike kits to consumers. Soon after he began manufacturing the bikes with a partner, Takeo Fujisawa. They incorporated the new company, now named Honda Motor Company, in 1948 and focused on selling motorized bicycles rather than cars.

The success of the motorbike business allowed them to experiment with other products like scooters and passenger automobiles. By 1964 they were selling automobiles in America and by 1969 had built their first US plant.
